Project Description

This summer, NDOT and Q&D Construction will be making much needed improvements to the 13-year-old northern section of the I-580 Carson City Freeway.  The existing roadway is rutting and cracking on this section of interstate which was first open in 2006. Approximately two inches of the roadway surface will be removed and repaved on nearly six miles of interstate.

The project limits are on I-580 Carson City Freeway from Duck Hill in northern Carson City to the Fairview Drive exit in central Carson City. Construction is anticipated to begin on Monday, May 20, 2019.  Drivers will see night time single lane closures, ramp closures and minor detours. No two consecutive ramps will be closed at the same time.

Crews will work to complete the improvements in one season, but operations may continue into 2020 with a winter shutdown. Construction is weather permitting.

Upcoming Traffic Control

Early 2020

With the majority of repaving completed on I-580 between Arrowhead and Fairview drives in Carson City, road work through early 2020 will primarily consist of shoulder work.

  • Motorists should anticipate occasional overnight single lane closures between 6 pm and 6 am.
  • Periodic overnight interstate ramp closures will also take place between 6 pm and 6 am on weekdays for finishing work.

Carson Freeway roadway, electrical and signage improvements. If allowed to deteriorate to poor condition, the interstate surface could require major reconstruction which may cost as much as six times more than the upcoming repaving.

Construction is anticipated to begin Wednesday evening May 29, weather permitting. Construction will take place between 6pm and 6am nightly Sunday evenings through Saturday mornings.
